Trend Bible

mydeco Guest Blog: London Design Festival 2011

The much-anticipated London Design Festival has been and gone, leaving a cluster of pop-up shops, many commissions and the design blogosphere publishing like mad in its wake. For all of you who missed out, Annabelle Dawson, editorial assistant at the interior and design website mydeco.com, picks out an eye-catching LDF trend:

We couldn’t wait for the London Design Festival to begin, so much so that I started a week early at Top Drawer, London’s Kensington Olympia. Needless to say, some of mydeco’s boutique designers were among the riot of trendsetting accessory and gift stalls and I also saw our friends at Trend Bible showcasing Christmas Craft and Midnight Garden spring/summer looks.
Back in April 2010, Trend Bible had predicted that ‘Geographique’ would be a major style for Autumn/Winter 2011/12 and how right they were. There was no denying that this trend, with its focus on handmade, highly patterned surfaces, and pieced-together asymmetric shapes, was in abundance.
100% Design
As LDF kicked off last week, a long-awaited trip to 100% Design at Earls Court confirmed this look as key for home design with eye-catching graphic prints colouring every corner.

Lorna Syson’s gorgeous Bradbury lampshades and cushions embody the key features of Geographique – striking asymmetric shapes and block colouring which provide an upbeat, perky look for winter.
Similarly, we spotted Kirath Ghundoo (a new surface pattern designer coming soon to mydeco boutique) showing her eye-popping geometric wallpaper panels, which were garnering oohs and ahhs from passers by. The panels can be mixed and matched at will as her graphic prints are purposefully abstract and inconsistent, which also means that no roll ends go to waste. Kirath’s prints would make an exciting focal point to a restrained interior or a fun, tactile addition to a child’s playroom.

Tent London
After 100%, my next London Design Festival stop was Tent London in Brick Lane. Here the vibe was less commercial and much more quirky – the perfect show for mydeco’s boutique designer makers.
Melanie Porter’s fabulous knitted lampshades, armchairs and even clocks were perfectly in tune with the ‘Geographique’ principle of mismatching pattern and texture to create something that is exciting but comforting and familiar at the same time.

Over at Abigail Borg’s stand her wallpapers and cushions depicted almost hyper-real flora and fauna, which perfectly encapsulated Trend Bible’s forecast for the clash of the exotic and familiar.
Whether you want to embrace the trend wholeheartedly and ‘Geographique’ your home, or add just one beautiful handmade piece or panel of funky, graphic wallpaper, this look is guaranteed to brighten up your home for winter.
